It was a holiday weekend

does anyone know what the native word for question is in english? (question is a french word)

Fræġn, which today is "frain". Btw, question comes from Latin quaestiōnem and entered Middle English via Anglo-Norman. :^)

ok yes technically it comes from latin but it entered through old French!!!also thanks btw, and where did you find this out?

You can’t learn a language with Duolingo.

>Saturn's interior is probably composed of a core of iron–nickel and rock (silicon and oxygen compounds). This core is surrounded by a deep layer of metallic hydrogen, an intermediate layer of liquid hydrogen and liquid helium, and finally a gaseous outer layer. Saturn has a pale yellow hue due to ammonia crystals in its upper atmosphere. Electrical current within the metallic hydrogen layer is thought to give rise to Saturn's planetary magnetic field, which is weaker than Earth's, but has a magnetic moment 580 times that of Earth due to Saturn's larger size. Saturn's magnetic field strength is around one-twentieth of Jupiter's.

fuck off philosophytranny

id almost say well done if that werent the entire point of the exercise to begin with. if you believe translation is the word for word rephrasing of a sentence into another language, youre dead wrong. read the sentence, consider all important bits, rewrite it. its a simple exercise and incentivises you to construct a sentence with necessary bits of information, if something cannot be said, find another way or leave it out. simple as.

about that fellow over here... even he was almost right when he parotted someone else's talking points with the exact same vernacular, but he didnt finish the thought. the advice he gave is only contextually true, if you were to construct a sentence out of the blue in a normal conversation without any real confidence that you can even say that with a good level of certainty that your solution is competent enough, then yea, its probably not very wise to do that often, since youre going to build up bad habits. however, none of that applies to this thread. the entire point is to take your chances, make a guess, and, this is crucial, get corrected by a native speaker. you can then learn from the answer. its a significant difference.

so no, the exercise is not entirely useless. it actually helps a lot.

>some 45 year old roastie told me today German was an angry language and french was beautiful

shes right to an extent brudi

yeah because its definitely not a subjective matter right? or that french literally has more guttural sounds than german? or that people only think x language is y adjective due to american pop culture?

Stop overthinking it, you incel autist.
People say all sorts of dumb shit all the time.

You're just jealous your language is digusting G*rmanic and not superior beautiful Romance.

lmao its pretty much common knowledge that most romance lang countries are more posh than those of g*rmanics. but i believe that perception of how a language sounds cannot really just be wrapped up in saying that its harsh because of gutteral sounds, french also has a lot of nasal vowels and generally an enforced flow that keeps everything smooth. they add pointless letters to things just so they dont have to make a stop inbetween two words. the gutteral sounds get equalised by how round french sounds in general.

with german id say it doesnt have to stem from sounds like /x/ either, the reason why russian sounds a million times softer despite also having sounds like that is because they really seem to hate too many rough endings, they have an entire letter in their alphabet of which the sole purpose is to soften the preceeding consonant, whereas in german, word endings are very exact and sound choppy. but its hard for me tto have an opinion on this because i cannot listen to german that way, or at least i dont know how you can "objectively" dissect your mothertongue.

just because i make an argument about something doesnt mean im an incel

yikes

>lmao its pretty much common knowledge that most romance lang countries are more posh than those of g*rmanics.
thats what im saying. We need to stop putting stereotypes of the country and applying them to the language, when it is just a way to talk.

well ok, i said all that, but i said it without judgement. i dont really think harsh or soft are inherently good or bad traits, i very much like german the way it is, the same way i like french the way it is. and i think those things might intertwine with culture at least a little bit, and if not, then our perception of their traits definitely does. but again, that doesnt have to be a bad thing tbdesu.

That's subjectively stupid as fuck, but if you're willing to waste several hundreds of hours for the sake of being able to save a day at most, then do it.
Otherwise, don't waste your time learning other languages.

If you mean pornhwas and whatever the Chinese are doing nowadays, sure. Why would you not learn the source language?

I'm mostly interested in Japanese stuff. As far as I know, pornography is illegal in South Korea, and highly restricted in the PRC, so I doubt there'd be much erotic content being produced in either of those countries.

earned 700xp on French just today. holy fuck. The random user the other day was right, French is really a fun language to learn. pronouncing the words does pose a challenge. I don't know anyone who speaks French that I could practice with.

French vocab is easy, but the pronunciation makes me REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

French pronunciation is a piece of cake

Yeah, I'm asking you, why would you not learn the source language? You're going to run into similar problems grammatically if you pick Korean and Chinese requires to drill Kanji forever, cause "Kanji" is the entire language

Your vowel inventory is one of the largest in the world, of course it seems that way to you

It's really not that bad. It looks completely arbitrary at first, but it's little more than a big set of rules that you need to learn. Granted, the rules aren't always the most intuitive, and there are plenty of exceptions (e.g. "fils", "oignon", "mets", etc.), but if you learn all the rules you can know how to pronounce the overwhelming majority of words in French.

I think he means actually forming the sounds consistently

No, da. Verujem da Bolševska eliminacija djece cara bila opravdna i potrebna, kako si doznao?

It's not entirely based on stereotyping though. Most people just don't find the sound of German (and Dutch) pleasant but like how Spanish, Italian and French sound.

It's pretty evident at the Eurovision Song Contest where American influences are not really present. Germanic language countries almost never perform in their own language anymore since they usually got bad scores. There was a rule that enforced the performers to sing in an official language of their country. When the rule was lifted from 1973 til 1976, 2 Germanic language countries won with English songs (Sweden and the Netherlands). The rule was removed after this until 1999, and only 5 Germanic languages won in that period. Countries like Switzerland and Luxembourg just used French.
Italy, Spain and France however still constantly perform in their own language (or both in English and their native language, like France did this year). In fact, there's always drama in their countries if they don't.
Slavic countries also often perform in their own language but every Germanic language almost never does. Iceland was the only exception this year.

So it's not just an American thing, but it's obviously even more biased for Americans, both because of propaganda-like media and less contact with the actual languages.

>The rule was removed after this until 1999
I meant that the rule enforcing the countries to perform in one of their offical languages returned after 1976 and then was lifted again in 1999

Dunno about modern Dutch proper, but Afrikaans is one of the most beautiful European (derived) languages.
youtu.be/tJrGfTQH5HY

>American influences are not really present.
Not really Bart, plenty of the music has American influence. The English singing is in an American accent, like a lot of English singing.
I'd say the problem is that the Germanic languages have a lot of harder consonantal sounds at the ends of words which combined with the prosody of Germanic stress tends to be limiting. The vowels are also a bit stranger. Now compared to Romance languages which are more "vowelly" in general and the fact that the actual vowel inventory tends to be pretty "pure" and open, it lets people sing in pure tones more easily without having to worry about finishing on an awkward stop consonant or something. Your own language I would suggest could improve results with a zachter G like in the south and a different vowel inventory for singing, like how British singers often adopt a general American sort of vowel inventory.

Afrikaans is pretty close to Dutch. I'm sure most people would agree it sounds awful.

>plenty of the music has American influence
I know, that's not what I meant. I meant that the voters are less biased in their opinions (compared to Americans) about other languages because they're European.
And yeah it does also have to do with how the "word melody" changes the way songs and lyrics have to be structured. This year's winning song for example would've been impossible to perform in Dutch without drastically changing the lyrics, if at all.

Also I'm actually not Dutch, I'm German. I do live in the south of the Netherlands and yeah the softer G definitely makes it sound better. Although Flemish is even softer but I think it's almost too much, it sounds pretty silly sometimes.

Listen to this and tell me it doesn't have soul.

I didn't say it sounds awful, I just think most people would think it does. I do like the sound of Dutch, it's cute. But I am German so it's not surprising as Dutch is mostly softer than German, aside the stronger emphasis on ch- or g-sounds (x in IPA)

Fair enough, mein Freund.

>And yeah it does also have to do with how the "word melody" changes the way songs and lyrics have to be structured. This year's winning song for example would've been impossible to perform in Dutch without drastically changing the lyrics, if at all.

>Also I'm actually not Dutch, I'm German

>Although Flemish is even softer but I think it's almost too much, it sounds pretty silly sometimes.
Yeah, I guess. Dutch in general seems to work better in comical music, but there are some acts like Bazart that, while I'm not really a fan of them, manage to make it work in a contemporary context. youtube.com/watch?v=pew1rERKHMo

Eu am vazut eroarele am facut în gramatica mea. îmi pare rău, am scris acest în 3 dimineața

>stronger emphasis on ch- or g-sounds (x in IPA)
Yeah, there's another thing. I find that that fricative works better when used in Celtic songs, like Welsh and Gaelic, and German better than it does in Dutch. I'm not sure if it's the placement or the fact that Dutch simply has more contrasting stop consonants that cause it to feel out of place.
In lots of speakers the two are allophonic though

Yeah I was thinking of that challenge video actually, kek. Disrespect for the Swedish dude not even trying to sing it, though.
[pretendspoilersworkhere]Fuck, Duncan a cute[/spoiler]
>Any opinion on your act getting null?
Fucking hilarious. The song was incredibly boring just as every year so we're used to it, I at least fully expected it to perform horribly. UK scoring even worse than us was surprising to me though.
Fuck the guys who choose the songs for us, they are always awful. We have lots of young talent but they just pick a generic ass song and someone to perform it. This year's song was a rejected Eurovision song from Switzerland, written by someone who didn't even know what Eurovision is. It's ridiculous. Unironically soulless.
You're right, my bad. I just looked up the German one, I forgot that it's different because it's always at the end of words and thus not voiced. They are almost the same though.

>spoiler

>UK scoring even worse than us was surprising to me though.

Yeah there was a voting error, the Belarus jury gave their rankings in the reverse order, so their 12 points was actually the worst ranked song lmao
UK was last in either case though, Germany just went from third-to-last to second-to-last.
>Well, we all know that's most of Eurovision. Who would you enter for Netherlands 2020?
No idea, but I would like if they would keep choosing talented singer-songwriters instead of established artists, picked by a private jury instead of letting the public decide. I think Duncan suggested Naaz but I don't know her.

Did you only start caring about Eurovision since Australia joined or were you following the event before as well?

"an ask" could have also meant a question

Lets make this clear, we joined because it was already a popular event here. I think it ties back to the ABBA craze, I don't know much about its popularity here before that. But I remember stuff like Finland 2006, Sax guy, Dubstep Opera guy, etc.
