Tipping seems like one of those things that stopped making sense in american society around the mid 70's and late 80's because it requires some degree of social cohesion that is becoming impossible to maintain due to mass migration and all the things this board and Jow Forums complains about all the time
Think about that, you can easily figure a restaurant in the 50's and everything working out just fine, kids buying their first houses just fresh out of college with a summer job, etc

Now society has changed and a simple job isn't enough for the average joe to live comfortably, people can't rely on a minimum wage and that burden ends up being carried by the costumers being forced to tip, while those old social conventions still shame people who don't willingly comply to that, or just point out that this behavior should theoretically change

In all seriousness, waitstaff in the USA complaining is petty shit. My American wife waited tables for a bit at a pretty nice place over there and was easily averaging $150 a night just from tips. It was much higher in season and on busy nights. That would be an above average salary in the UK and well above what a waitress makes over here.

Well as you said, it really depends on where you work. Friend of mine worked in a shitty Pizza Hut in a poor, somewhat secluded area and often struggles to get enough. Huge families with 8 kids who are loud as shit and give her tons of work often just tip 5-10 bucks despite ordering food for 100+. Or crazy ass methheads who obviously also don't tip shit.
