"Kremlin" means basically a fortress. In the middle ages every town had own kremlin. The one in Moscow is just the largest, the best-preserved and the best-known one.

There used to be more than 50 kremlins, but most of them are completely destroyed as for today.

Might not look like much, but never was taken (outside WW2...), in parts thanks to the strong city fortification that is still pretty intakt today.
