I can name all 50 states. At my peak I could name 1400 counties. I can name all incorporated cities of California (about 480, the exact number always escapes me), Nevada (19), Hawaii (1) and Arizona (91). I can name at least 9 of the 30 largest cities in every state. Once I could name the top 300 most populated cities in Texas, but I probably can't now.

Chicago is my least favourite metropolitan area to study because it's so messy. Connecticut and New Jersey also have fucked up city borders.

I think I can name all cities and townships in Metro Vancouver, and about 50 cities in Ontario.

It is, I've forgot the ones I don't know anything at all about, but those that contain major cities are pretty much ingrained in my memory by now.

I find the best way to memorise a list is not just to look at names, but to actually remember their locations and some additional information about them. Else you'd just forget things easily.

Alberta has Calgary + Oil + Evangelicals, so they're not irrelevant.

They really aren't, apart from Kansas, Nebraska, Michigan, Iowa, Texas, and maybe a few more. Counties especially in the west have quite unique shapes.

Even if there are squares it just takes a bit of practice locating them, like Lubbock County TX or Polk County IA if you know roughly where Lubbock or Des Moines are. It's the squarish counties with nothing interesting in them that are hard to remember and locate on a map.

Not to mention square-shaped cities are very common in the Midwest and you can memorise them rather easily with a bit of practice. All the major suburbs of the Twin Cities and many of those around Detroit are perfect squares. Yet I consider those much easier to remember and locate than Chicago's or St. Louis's suburbs.

I'm familiar with DFW, Miami, LA, Denver and Seattle but to the untrained eye those are also a very big mess.
