Not originally but that is what it became. However most balked at being asked to treat Italians or Greeks as "white" and for good reason.

Btw I don't know if the guy is Greek. I just googled "Swarthy Europeans". I just noticed that about 30% of Greeks are dark skinned.

1) the word white is amorphous and finicky.
2) some greeks are white, even by your implied definition - that is having "white" looks
treat white italians as white, treat nonwhite italians as nonwhite. however, treat everybody with decency and nobody will bother you.
