If BAE committed to Airbus and kept their stocks they would have gotten 10 times their investment back but instead they chose to terminate the last British stake in commercial aircraft manufacturing, basically a foreshadowing of Brexit.

They were fucked, the a320neo was/is "perfect" and they couldn't make the same thing with the very old 737 design without ruining the aerodynamic.

It wasn't the engines, it wasn't the software, it wasn't the training necessary for pilots, it wasn't even the cost of all the above
It was that they lied when it first came out and said that pilots didn't need additional training.
Pilots experienced an aggressive computer that was changing the steering on the plane and weren't informed about it, some of them got unlucky when they were fighting the "glitch" and killed everyone.
