Why do they call foreigners derogatory names, even if speaking neutrally about them? Is xenophobia really rooted that deep into their culture?

Whenever I hear you speak of foreigners you use words such as gringo or guiri, even when speaking English. Maybe it's more prevalent on the internet but I haven't noticed other cultures using slurs for foreigners like that

a lot of names started as a scientific way to name a person ethnic or a way to identify foreigners.
In Spain the word negro was originally created to identify a black person from Africa, same as the word indio to identify someone from India and gringo to identify someone from anglo countries all of these were never intended to be offensive but as always racism twist the good things and make it an offensive slur because of the tone of the word being said.
Today if you call a native latinamerican the word indio, he will feel offended, not the same as africans being called negro because here in latam most understand that's the name of the color, but it depends on the tone of the person saying it.
Gringo was never considered an insult to anglos because it was never said with an insulting tone, but after trump it may change the tone and perception of the word.

it depends on the context also you have to ask almost every hispani country that uses 'gringo' to know the background.

If you say:
Calla gringo chupapinga (shut up cocksucker gringo), it is offensive because peru user includes an offensive adjective.

However if i say: That gringo player is very fast, i'm just saying 'That american player is very fast'

Gringo in Mexico is not a rude nor a good ord, it's just an informal word and it depends on context and the way it is used in a word to consider it offensive or not.

Do you not do that? We do that all the time. Italians are Tschinggala or Walsche, Former Yugoslavians are Tschuschn and Germans are pief. These words are both used neutrally and derogatory, especially the German one, but we almost always speak derogatorily about g*Rmoids

Elaborate. We refer to Black people as negros both in a friendly or derogatory way (depends on tone of voice) and they don't react like American chimps do at the mere mention of the term

The definition of gringo is a person with inability to speak spanish with fluency and naturality, it comes from the greek inmigrants that arrived at spain after the collapse of Byzantium, as you can see hy definition alone you are most likely a gringo unless you have good knowledge in spanish, we dont consider italians, french portuguese and spaniards as gringos because they have relative ease at speaking spanish due to the linguistic proximity, and as

Gringo is not an insult at least not by itself, its all about the context as for other folks, well if you are black regardless of where you are from you will be referred to as negro, here at least it isn't an offensive word it is actually common for people to call black folk negro in the same context that you use Pete for someone named Peter, for example, the same applies for Asian folk they are usually referred to as chino and it works the same as calling someone "mike" if his name is Michael. as for Europeans, well you are all gringos until someone knows where you are actually from and then you will probably be called by your name

In Spanish, Unitedstatian sounds lame and American sounds wrong. It's gringo's fault for not having a real name. Also, you don't see Ticos, Chapines or Catrachos complain about their nickname nationality like gringo special snowflakes.
