I went there on a school trip. Holy shit Athens is a hideous city, it's pretty much third world. The rest of Greece is absolutely beautiful but Athens itself is like a crowded, polluted, crumbling maze of Soviet-style buildings. Somehow it avoids entirely the finesse of the modern and the grandeur of the old (Parthenon excepting).
