In this region half the population lives in the rural area in real houses that aren't mcmansions and so do I and the other half lives in straight up commieblocks, so I've had my taste of either. I'd rather live in a commieblock with soul than in a suburban mcmansion where I'll literally drop dead from dehydration if I try to take off anywhere on foot.

The attempts at socialism succeeded in many ways with the Soviets, China is still ruled by a communist party and is not only continues to develop, but is also the only country actually decreasing world poverty, and pol pot was a result of the Vietnam war and then later supported by the US. Please dont confuse socialism and communism. One is economic model which tries to lower the gap between single black mother and bill gates in form of purchase power by taxes.

Other is phantasmagoric phylosophy where selected few is dictating to the rest of society how they should live. I haven't. Socialism is a society in which the workers own the means of production, and communism is a classless and stateless society. Despite being ruled by communist parties, no communist country has ever claimed to achieve communism as communism country is an oxymoron itself. Lenin didn't even claim to have achieved socialism, although Stalin did, which has been received with controversy.

If by a Marxist analysis of class structure within China, then of course it's not socialist, it's capitalist. The government is ruled by a communist party however making the country communist. They are using state capitalism for their benefit to hopefully bring socialism in the future. Whether their sincere in that is not provable, what is provable is that their form of state capitalism works far better than capitalism in the the rest of the developing world.

And how does the working class owning the means of production make this invalid? Socialism only allows this to exist, rather than in capitalism where exploitation exists for all except the ruling class. Why does working in your garden for 5 hours seem enjoyable, but working for 5 hours as a job seem unenjoyable? Because is one, you own your means of production, and are not alienated from the product you produce, while in the other you have no control over the product you produce, but are forced to participate in order to live in society. Socialism is just turning your job into a place ran by all those who work there, rather than a single owner who controls all who work for him.

socialism worked for millions, failed for some, while capitalism continues to fail for millions, and works for some. To say the previous attempts in the 20th century were outright a failure is childish. There are reason as to why these societies developed they way they did, but I can't fit that all in here. Regardless, socialism is on the rise again because capitalism is riddled with contradictions which result in crisis, like we saw in 2008 and which still affects us to this day.

The majority of jobs in the developed world are not these. People have the same complaints about work whether you're a computer programmer, a janitor, or a salesman. Almost everyone dislikes work, just some jobs come with benefits that make them more bearable than others. Mondays suck is a white collar joke not a blue collar one.

Btw during communism here it was ILLEGAL to be unemployed. And you guessed it, people with bad political background were denied to work as doctors or engineers. So they ended up being cashiers or toilet cleaners despite having university degrees. The most undesirables were forced to mine uranium which was basically life sentence with ~5 years top delay.

I'm aware. Ignoring that for a second, it shows that unemployment is a failure of capitalism and not something that has to exist. The soviet system rose out of being a largely peasant country, fighting a world war, fighting a civil war while being invaded by multiple great powers, and then fighting another world war. I don't want to emulate the soviet system here, but I understand where it came from. Regardless, like I said, it worked for millions, which is why the majority of the eastern european population say life was better under communism than life under their liberating capitalism.

I go to my job and work on a project i enjoy and spend as much time working on it as i please for that day
Then i go to the local gym to have a workout
I stop by the grocery store where i pick up whatever food i need since we have automated agriculture to such a point where food is plentiful and i can get whatever i want
Then i go home and take as much time i need to recharge for the next work day because i dont have a slavedriver that needs me to be in at a certain arbitary time of day

I think deep down i would actually resonate very well with communist ideas but the thought of being lumped in together with all the identity politics freak that hijacked the ideology discourages me from actually calling myself communist
