Because a strong Iran means no full control of the Middle East for American allies Israel and Saudi Arabia. Because Americans need to keep control of the oil flow and make sure there are no competitors to the petrodollar. Because if the Middle East becomes a series of Iranian puppets, the Russians and Chinese will be able to call dibs on its oil and pay with whatever currency they please.
