Apparently begging pays more than minimum wage.

Apparently begging pays more than minimum wage.
Met a homeless guy once who made anywhere from $100 to $200 a day from begging. Funny thing was he had a house and did a lot of drugs. He'd go out early in the morning with his sleeping bag and lay down at a grocery store, people would give him money, food and sometimes even drugs, he'd take it all. Then at the end of the day at around 7Pm he'd pack up, go to a local dealer, buy drugs, head home and get high, go to bed and repeat the next day.
I came to his house once, was a really nice place. Nothing fancy but definitely better than a lot of people slaving away at an office have. He did show me his diploma's in business and management but told me that nobody would hire him because of his ethnicity. The only place he'd get a job he said was at places like McDonalds and Burger King, and that he'd work below his education. So instead of doing that he went begging. He told me that at first he was really ashamed of himself but after a while it didn't anymore and he enjoys it.
Was a really nice guy, he was horribly addicted though.
How’d you get this story out of him?
>he doesn’t have a plan A, B, C, D, E, and F
F is homeless/beggar and it means I’m a complete failure. Plan E, the worst one that isn’t down & out, I work retail or something.
I was homeless myself and I already met him trough a dealer (did a lot of drugs myself). He knew me and my personality, I think he trusted me. I also think that he kind of wanted to share his story, cause I did sense some kind of pleasure in what must have been to him a clever way he beat the system and society.
ohyeah and he let me sleep at his house for a while. Like I said, he's a really nice guy. I totally get it though. Why would he slave away at some low level position at Mcdonalds in his 30's? It's a little deceptive but I can't blame him.
At least I'm not black. My backup plan is to just keep wage slaving. I'm currently taking home about 120k a year so not doing too bad
Yeah, there was a "homeless" man in my college town too that would spend the busier parts of the day begging on one of the busier streets on campus. Turns out he had a rent controlled apartment he rented out to college kids for cash, and lived in his sisters house off campus. He would usually spend his money on alcohol & painkillers. Its sad what people do to satisfy their addictions.
>does a shitload of drugs
>can't get hired because of his ethnicity
Makes sense to me.
Yeah just think of all those poor fuckers stuck in office cubicles all day, tragic stuff
He had really made it into his trade though, whilst we were getting high he taught me the trick of the trade that is begging. Like for example he told me you'd want to bring some props, like his sleepingbag, not shave, not shower (do that at the end of the day) to make it all more convincing. He said its best to lay down somewhere you know people will stop. ON a busy street even if people want to give something, they probably won't cause they need to go somewhere. Though at a grocery store people have more time to symphatize with you and they have more time to stop and notice you.
He had all kinds of tricks and idea's to ensure you'd be making atleast a 100$ a day.
Another thing for example is hiding dollar bills. Everytime someone gives you a bill you hide it somewhere, and you'd have your hat out infront of you with some coins in it already, people are less likely to dump money in an empty hat, if people see some small donations they're more eager to also give something.
It was fucking hilarious hearing him talk about this.
That guys a legend. Glad you got to hear his story
Wow, this is really informative.
Im stuck 3000km away from home with my car, just ran out of money today, luckily have couple of days food left. Im just thinking how to get money tomorrow on the streets, as i cant play any instruments.
Do you think funny signs also work, as in "need money for world travel" and a red bucket or something.
Backstory is, i started a world travel as i do have some passive income but because of unexpected cartrouble in at 0 until the end of month. Srsly considering begging, i mean whats the worst that can happen.
honestly if you incorporate humor I think people would be more willing to donate
I think one reason homeless people are avoided is because they're perceived as crazy, mentally unstable, ungrateful etc. and any encounter is risky. Many are of course. But if you can lighten the mood people may be more receptive
I saw a black homeless guy in Boston with a sign asking for help to fund his alcoholism. Seemed to do very well
yeah that guy used a cardboard sign aswell. btw, lots of travellers beg for money, it's actually even easier for a traveller to accumulate money trough begging than it is for homeless people. You have to choose your approach however. As a traveller its best to be a little more energetic than pretending to be homeless. People like it when they see a young person travelling by themselves and like to contribute to that.
Thanks, i will try it then. Hope it works out.
Also currently in Romania, if any anons want to have a beer or two.
You people are fucking losers. Get a job, buy a house and have kids. Have you ever thought that maybe you're making these tourist shitholes even worse by being there and begging? GET. A. FUCKING. JOB.
I think what that guy really taught me is that people have a herd mentality, and that begging is not a moral question but a social question. For example, you could try putting a mirror next to your sign (might work better when you go for empathy if you're homless) people are more likely to consider your cause when they look in a mirror cause it reflects their image. And people don't like it when they're confronted with a negative aspect of themselves. So they rather pretend that they're generous and give you money and feel better about themselves.
Atleast that mirror trick I just thought of because I think some psychology research showed that if you put a mirror up, people are less likely to misbehave and more likely to help cause they're confronted with themselves and they want to pretend that they are this good guy or something.
Hey dude, I never begged for money. But I really don't care if thats what someone does. I think it's really interesting from a social pov.
Wow, you got some issues and are also very narrow minded.
I did start my own successful business few years ago and workes my ass off. That business now gives me the freedom to travel and makes me money while im away. As i said, unexpected cartrouble took the last of this months funds and i dont think i will disturb anyone with my sign somewhere. Also who said anything about tourist areas, im the only tourist in the current town. Chill out and i hope that one day you find happiness.
