they were always a part of the same country, herzegovina is more croatian and bosnia is more mixed
eastern herzegovina is serbian and western is croatian but overall croatians make up the majority

How did Serbs end up in the exclave within Bosnia? Was it that bosniaks broke away from Serbs after they islamized? Then again, whether Bosnia before the Ottomans was considered a Serbian state is debated

also serbs from croatia are genetically the closest to croatians from croatia, which proves that lots of them converted to orthodoxy or at least mixed with serbs along with serbs from bosnia, who are also closer genetically to croatians than serbs

Much localised ethnic cleansing and migration happened in 20th century in Yugoslavia.
