How and when did Britishers change from being stereotypically considered high-class gentlemen to drunken accented rednecks?

They have always been like that people abroad have just never seen them that way

This.

Brits were always looked down by continental Europeans. Only Americans larped them into this psoh gentleman status.

This blew my mind a few years ago.

this

we are the biggest con artists in the world, idolized across the atlantic while simultaneously shithousing continental europe with our thuggery

The British high class always considered British workers subhuman - and they weren't wrong. They created the monocled gentleman stereotype for themselves, not for all Brits. Read Chesterton, Byron or PB Shelley.

>Only Americans larped them into this psoh gentleman status
I still see boomers and people who have never left their state do this.

This is quite true, we are all pretty much conditioned to think of brits as sophisticated, extraordinarily well mannered effete types

When international travel became cheap and thus people were exposed to the poor as well as the rich.

Wasn't intending to be insulting. I lived in England for several years, so it's very jarring to see the average American completely misunderstand your culture

Their media is really popular with boomers here as well. Mostly all this dry drama shows, mysteries and period pieces where everyone is always portrayed as super civilized.

It's not very nice but historically British have probably the worst reputation over here after the French and Germans.

>Brits were always looked down by continental Europeans.
mostly because of envy

Does this mean that we weren't that bad, or that we're not relevant anymore for Dutch people?

For us Americans the only exposure to British people was their posh elite. Until the internet came and we got see what the common Brit was.

When the lower class could afford to travel abroad

lolno, the english court was known for being backwards, with nobles pissing behind columns and a general lack of bathing. Also they liked horses a little too much. Culture wise, the english highborn sucked french dick like very few.

Things changed dramaticaly in the late 17th century and by the mid 18th century the english court was very much on par with the rest of the continent, if not more civilized.

When they embraced nationalism.

nationalism isn't restricted to the poor though, richfags attack the poor to enhance the image of the nation

The upper class before were the only ones with money to leave the island and visit other countries. That's still kinda why us burgers think brits are classy, only the rich ones come here because it's a lot more money to come here especially compared to Europe.

Eastern Euros are on another planet

Big shitty underclass here and it's only gonna get worse after Brexit with increased poverty

they all look like Poles

and they say our diaspora doesn't assimilate
