Took French in highschool so I can understand a fair amount of it, but I'm so out of practice that I probably couldn't speak it for the life of me. Also can understand Germanic/Romance languages to an extent because of their roots in English.

nekaj južnjaške krvi sicer imam po materini strani, a do 25ega ali tam nekje nisem vedel niti tega, da je 'stranec' srbohrvaška beseda, temveč sem mislil, da je to slovenščina iz 19. stoletja (saj je bilo v takratni domači literaturi polno hrvatizmov). Nekega dne pa sem se opogumil in začel lurkati ex-yu in kmalu ugotovil, da onkraj parih ducatov besed, ki jih je bilo treba guglati, jezikovnih ovir takorekoč ni, če hočeš kot Slovenec brati srbohrvaško. Ne trdim, da bi srbohrvaško znal tudi pisati, a moje razumevanje se je zelo hitro povzpelo na 99%.

Similar, but not mutual intelligible. A dane wouldn't get more than just a few words he heard faroese. Also danish is very simplified, while faroese has grammar.

I find Polish somewhat more understandable than Czech, actually. Maybe it's cause of all the germanisms. But I've never had a moment where I'd mistake Polish dialogue for Slovenian dialogue in a movie, as it has happened with Russian. Russian sounds exactly like Slovenian in very short stretches, and no other language but Serbocroatian has this quality.

I know that some Croat dialects have a feature we call "mazurzenie", which is that ž, š, č are pronounced like z, s, c. It's common in rural Polish dialect (mostly Masovian and Lesser Polish)

I never quite got to the bottom of why using Slovenian at the Croatian seaside is out of the question for the average Slovene (like me as a kid), whether it's some cultural holdover from Yugoslavia where their language was dominant and ours was regional or whether it's just the fact that Slovenian phonology and accentuation is unintelligible to Croats.

But you must agree Shtokavian is just the most beautiful while the simplest yet the most logical Slavic language.
