I still don't understand what this token does. I keep trying to read the whitepaper but the abbreviation OMG distracts me and makes it hard to take it seriously, so I end up doing something else.

Think about it, can a coin called OMG really be a global currency in a few years? This is one of those cases where bad branding hurts the product. I don't care what the goals are or how good the technology is. I'm not surprised it hasn't gone up.

It's a staking token for a PoS blockchain, whose main use is to be a dex for tokens, which can either be created directly on it (like fiat backed tokens), or 'imported' from other blockchains.
The main blockchain can be connected to other blockchains with Plasma (that's why they're working on it), but also LN (which is why it's mentioned in the whitepaper).
