As I understand, they were told from their own propaganda that the South was like Mad Max or something and people lived in poverty in favela-tier slums and were enslaved/whipped/raped all day every day by the US imperialists and their puppet fascists in Saigon.
When the NVA took Saigon in 75 they realized how much they'd been lied to and how the shops were full of things to buy while the North barely had anything short of basic necessities. For years the border between the north and south was closed so people from the former couldn't see how much higher the latter's standards of living were.

Vietnam has a very young population, three quarters of Vietnamese are under 30 and the vast majority of people alive today have no memory of the war and only a vague awareness that it ever even happened.

I disliked my history education because half of it was about interesting world events and the other half was about boring local Irish history since this is in Northern Ireland.
