Each participating country choses an artist and a song (sometimes individually, sometimes not, there's singer-songwriters as well such as this year's winner) to represent their country. Since as of now there's often over 40 countries participating, there's semifinals to weed out the weaker entries.
So each country comes up with their own stage show, sometimes with lots of fireworks, crazy costumes etc, but there's also very somber and minimalistic entries. It depends on the song. So after each show (2 semi finals and 1 final), the voting begins.
The voting system consists of a professional jury and calls from the viewers, each contributing 50% to the final score. Each country gets to vote, but they can't vote for their own country. So each country gives the other countries their points two times (jury and public votes), 12 for the 1st, 10 for the second, and 8 for the 3rd, 7 for the 4th etc till 1.

This years contest is now on Netflix, you could check it out if you want, it's pretty kino honestly, even if often just ironically
