AWAY DOWN SOUTH IN THE LAND OF TRAITORS

AWAY DOWN SOUTH IN THE LAND OF TRAITORS,
RATTLESNAKES AND ALLIGATORS,
RIGHT AWAY, COME AWAY, RIGHT AWAY, COME AWAY.
WHERE COTTON'S KING AND MEN ARE CHATTELS,
UNION BOYS WILL WIN THE BATTLES,
RIGHT AWAY, COME AWAY, RIGHT AWAY, COME AWAY.

THEN WE'LL ALL GO DOWN TO DIXIE,
AWAY, AWAY,
EACH DIXIE BOY MUST UNDERSTAND
THAT HE MUST MIND HIS UNCLE SAM,
AWAY, AWAY,
AND WE'LL ALL GO DOWN TO DIXIE.
AWAY, AWAY,
AND WE'LL ALL GO DOWN TO DIXIE.

The 1835 Philadelphia general strike took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was the first general strike in North America and involved some 20,000 workers who struck for a ten-hour workday and increased wages. The strike ended in complete victory for the workers.[1]

Disruption was widespread and at its height, the strikes were supported by about 100,000 workers. With the intervention of federal troops in several locations, most of the strikes were suppressed by early August. Labor continued to work to organize into unions to work for better wages and conditions. Fearing the social disruption, many cities built armories to support their militias; these defensive buildings still stand as symbols of the effort to suppress the labor unrest of this period.

With public attention on workers' wages and conditions, the B&O in 1880 founded an Employee Relief Association to provide death benefits and some health care. In 1884 it established a worker pension plan

USA had the most worker interest led struggles of any countries, 100+ strikes from 1800-1900 to fight for increased rights wages and quality of life before (((marxists))) came about.
