You know languages have history and shit?
For example, in Spanish "j" has a different sound to any other language, and the reason is because Spanish got the current "j" sound from Arabic, it was initially written with "x" but it was changed to "j" during the modern ages.
So actually words like "Mexico" or "Texas" aren't pronounced like English speaking people do.
Basically I want to know a bit about the history of the Czech language, and Slovak too because they are related.

What do you mean? "j" is pronounced as the palatal approximant, which is a consonant, not a vowel. Same as in German, Dutch, Danish, Estonian, Finnish, Hungarian, Polish, Croatian and Swedish for example.

To answer your question why it differs from Spanish or English usage: because a guy in 19th century thought it was a good idea to use it that way. Before that "y" or even "g" was used for that sound.

I actually can't tell well because it doesn't really exist in Spanish, so I pronounce it as "gu" in Spanish, but I can't really find a word pronounced exactly like that in English.

Also, the "u" sounds in words like Unicorn sounds like Spanish "yu" to me.
