As a novice trying to learn Japanese, I think that the adaptation of the Chinese written language to express the pre-existing Japanese spoken language, must be one of the greatest intellectual feats in history. Not to mention the development of two accessory scripts to fill in the blanks and make adoption of foreign words easier.
One of the fundamental characteristics of Japanese culture that makes it so successful is the ability to recognize excellence in other cultures and adopt and often improve upon those foreign ideas and practices. (Except when they were in one of those phases where they were lost in antipathy for all things foreign.)
