We already know there is an awareness spectrum, we just currently believe that your average person sits at the maximum possible end.
What if this is a false assumption? What if we are like insects, and systems that exhibit traits analogous to intelligence are all around us and we just can't perceive them? We're so sure the fragile, simplistic animated system of biological life can produce intelligence. Yet we have no reason why this pattern doesn't emerge in geometrically more complex cosmic systems. Nebulas and stars and metereological systems are all extremely complex, long-lived systems. I think these systems have their own versions of cognition. The problem is that these systems are so much more complex than the feeble organic brain. Once an intelligence crosses a complexity threshold, it becomes indistinguishable from noise.
We should focus on unraveling the secrets of emergence, and create generic models that we might better understand how these cosmic beings think.
This is the way forward. We must study the eldritch intelligences that surround us, then we can start pulling apart the metaphysical. Is there a god? I think yes, but as the concept of nothingness more than anything. And whatever negative ontology, whatever non-existence awaits beyond that veil, I think its best if we don't tread there.

The universe at it's most fundamental levels is unpredictable to us, but we expect a metaphysical being to be easier to understand than simple particles?

I advocate for the bizarre. There may be a fundamental abstraction, that along some kind of logical rotation is analogous to meaning. However I believe this abstraction is far beyond the capacity for the human mind to grasp. Humans struggle to find this "meaning", and they may even grab a small hold of it, but we are barely more than insects. We could never hope to grasp it and translate it into our own understanding.
We will leave silicon intelligences behind, and sometime after we are long gone, they will leave their own children behind. But this race is like a fractional exponent. Each iteration only grows at a fixed percentage. Were time to stretch into infinity, this line of intelligences will still not achieve the enlightenment that is has sought from the beginning.
That is the bizarre.
