Cargo trains probably, happens in Tartu, you can hear the trains grinding or thumping from a few km away if it's quiet outside.

i used to live in tallinn old town and hear the cargo trains going through baltijaam during night. same shit while living in tartu tammelinn. and in my current place i can hear them about 5km away if it's really quiet, which it is most of the time

This city seems Lovecraftian at times, it has beautiful architecture but dilapidated buildings and the Soviet architecture and neighbourhoods are really unkempt. Add the sound to it.

cargo trains are great in a manner. they move slow during the night so if you're shit out of money and deserted in some far away part of the town you can jump them and they take you to central, or some industrial area near central.

most don't have large beds here, it's as wide as the container on top
the only large bed ones I saw didn't have any edges, so you can't really hitch a ride

the back carry always has a platform. it's a bit of a bitch to jump it tho since you have to run on the tracks, but it's totally doable and safer than jumping some middle carry because no one will see you. unless you're crossing some road and there are cars with lights on

sometimes the trains have lots of wagons but 20 minutes does seem too long
