I really agree, germany is a really bland and depressing place. the only parts I truly loved were in the southwest because of the nice hills that started to give character or the small charming cities like monschau which didn't get bombed to oblivion and rebuilt. east germany is incredibly depressing.

I love poland, I did a road trip around it and went to gdansk, wroclaw, zakopane, bielsko-biala, and a lot of driving in the polish countryside. what a lovely country.
