it's like if you make it through, wow congratulations, you crawled through a fucking hole. but if you get stuck? help is several hours away, they might not find you in time, even if they do find you they might not be able to rescue you, your death is going to be very slow and you'll have several hours to spend in mental anguish of why you thought extreme caving was a good idea in the first place and regretting all of your life choices up to this point

I don't get the extreme part either but I do get why caving exists. Since I was young, I always wanted to explore random places that people tend not to go, especially if they're some hole as if you're entering another realm, and I always get dreams of me running away from something scary and hiding inside a cave as the ultimate safe haven. I even dreamed exactly this just yesterday - the world gets nuked and I run inside a cave as the blast wave is right behind me.
I guess that this has an evolutionary psychology aspect to it of some sort, in the same way that people feel safe from getting as high up as possible whereas most of us have our palms sweat just from the thought of it - maybe they dream of running away from something chasing them by climbing up a long tree and feeling safe on the top, thereby binding the feeling of calmness to looking at everything else from a higher position, and proceeding to seek high altitudes as they feel rewarding to them, like those russians who make videos about it.

Imagine running out of battery. Is it better to backtrack or push forward?
