Poor pacing, half-baked storylines that go nowhere. Ari Aster also uses a match cut every five minutes which is obnoxious as fuck. My biggest problem with this guy is that he doesn’t self-edit AT ALL. If he gets an idea for something, he will use it, even if it sucks and doesn’t meet the tone of the film (like when the boy in hereditary smashes his face on the school desk after seeing his deranged reflection—scenes like this would fit better in a cheap, for-teens-only horror film, not some ostensibly high-brow horror/family drama.)
I really just don’t think he can balance his films very well, and I’m sure you’ll find it all over the place, tonally. Hereditary is pretty good, this one isn’t.
Thanks for an actually considered answer
it's jewish propaganda
pretty sure it's an accurate portrayal of the swedish/norwegian countryside. IE: full of inbred pagans
Imagine the kiss marks on your dick
It was pretty good. Not really as good as hereditary but still enjoyable if you like Asters style. I don't really know why you asked for our opinion specifically since the movie doesn't really delve deep into Swedish culture aside from some entry level lore and even then it makes up a ton of shit.
The only subplot that went nowhere was the one with the retard or did I forget something?
>ton
Did you mean tonne? Also it's nice to have a Scandinavian opinion on Hollywood/British flicks that are set there
Spoilers, OP
I meant more in the sense that the initial, supposedly gut-wrenching portion of the film really doesn’t carry much weight beyond the beginning. Take Hereditary as a counter example: that film, while flawed, never lets the audience forget the catastrophic death of the girl—every scene is stained by both the actor’s and audience’s inability to forget the horrific details (particularly the mom uncovering the girl’s body in the car while the boy lays in bed, wide-eyed, which I think is the best scene in the film).
Midsommar tries, and in my opinion fails, to cultivate a similar, dramatic tension that prevails over the course of the runtime—but it seems pretty halfhearted, really. The audience forgets, the actors don’t seem too bothered, and I think aster himself gets caught up in doing other things. It seems silly to introduce some horrific character death as justification for an actor’s mindstate or action, only to gradually lose that as the film goes on. Hereditary nails it, but Midsommar is too muddled imo
I see. Just keep in mind that I'm by no means a film buff so the Koran lad might have more insightful opinions if you are one yourself.
>loooong ass takes
Does that make you 5/5 kino director, like in Hereditary?
I see
I hate how they tried to fake Sweden, shooting it in Hungary. It looked really crap.
>takes
you mean shots?
(((Ari Aster)))
What is this?
The Belarusian clothing as well.
Just from seeing the trailer I can tell you that it has absolutely nothing to do with midsummer or Sweden at all. The clothing, architecture, dancing and even the nature is nothing like Sweden. There has also never been a midsummer with blue skies. It is always overcast and more often than not rains.
If you want to see an accurate representation of midsummer, watch this german IKEA commercial. youtu.be
