it did damage the edge. you're gonna have to shave off the edge on both sides with a wetstone to make the blade come into sharp form again. however, the rest of the blade, it does protect it from oxydising to rust. it createst a thin film of "super"rust which stops the further rust from developing so don't touch it with sharpening tools. leave it as it is. or if you're anal about it, put some mustard on it for a night. that's gonna keep the blade rustfree forever basically
