There is better bug/pest killer and repellent, but they're incredibly harmful and have been shelved because of that fact. Same with weed killer, it causes too much damage long term so we have the weak shit now.

Just use bravecto. It's an oral flea and tick med that lasts 3 months. My dog had issues with fleas as well when I used the topical ointment on him and haven't had a single issue since using bravecto.
