usa prisons might be shit but they are open population. you get out enough to meet other prisoners, form gangs, have human contact. norwegian prisons might have a hotell like cell but thats it. no contact with the world outside, no cellmates, no gangs, no work out in the yard. just you, a bed and 4 walls. 23/7 365days a year.

Only grugs think torturing criminals is a good thing. Funny how these "tough on crime" people never consider the consequences to prison guards and police officers. You have no idea how much suffering and trauma that goes on in prison houses to both COs and inmates while in humane prisons, there are actually nurturing and healthy relationships between the convicted and those trying to help them return to a productive and fulfilling life style. In canada, there was a CO who saved a guy trying to commit suicide in prison and the guy shanked the CO. Now the CO has PTSD and his marriage and life is falling apart because of the sheer amount of violence that occurs. Same thing about the death penalty. Look at the executioners and those who are required by law to witness executions. they are literally tormented every day by those they had to kill. They try to cope by saying "the state of _____ kills this inmate. i'm just pushing the button" but no these men are doing the state's dirty work and they suffer for it.

They are more effective at rehabilitating criminals though

Here in Canada, the government is legally responsible for the safety of all inmates. The courts REGULARLY hand out hundreds of thousands of dollars to inmates who sue "correctional facilities" for numerous abuses ranging from physical to sexual violence at the hands of other inmates and even guards.

Right now there are many inmates who are getting their sentences reduced because a conservative MP thought it would be a good idea to get rid of colour TV's that the inmates bought for with their own money. The Courts do not believe in tough on crime and society is paying for it. Not only does tough on crime make no sense based on data, it is costly and YOU not they are paying for it.

How can you be certain that one is guilty 100% ? We have already killed innocents in the past. Now you tell me, which is the best : you get rid of rotten apples but remove innocents in the process, or you jail everyone charged guilty so you can give the innocent a chance to salvation when time flows like it already happened. It's a big issue, christians would rather free a culprit than jail an innocent. What about you ?

It's more complicated than guilty or not guilty. If you killed ur abuser, that's murder at worse at best manslaughter. No it is not self defence. No you will not get a slap on the wrist. There are many indigenous people in Canadian prisons who killed their abusers (often indigenous people themselves) and are giving 25 years to life minimum. That means they have to serve 25 years before even having the possibility of parole; a parole which can get you sent back for decades for the most trivial infractions. The point being the law is actually much more like a blunt instrument than people want to admit.

Literally every law scholar disagrees with you. Degrees of guilt exist and the role of judge is not to apply prescribe sentences.. Judges JUDGE the circumstances of a situation and prescribe APPROPRIATE sentences. Minimum sentencing regime in America and Canada has ruined this and put hundreds of thousands in prisons to toil for decades.

We have pretty good prisons but our last government cut the access to social security after release which just throws former prisoners back to becoming criminals again.

It's not just the prison though. It's the whole package of low violence and help to find a job, housing etc. The laws regarding criminal records are also generally superior in Europe when it comes to these issues.
