I have always thought of Germany as the mix match sum of all the smaller parts of the HRE leading it to be the union it is today, very diverse I guess? While Austria's legacy is more of that of a centralized kingdom under the Habsburg and had closer ties to Rome/catholicism.

Switzerland is more like angry armed introverts who banded together.

But I have no clue about the cultures and how similar/differing they are. Can someone help explain?

I've never been in Austria, but I can tell you that Germany itself is pretty diverse yes. Bavaria, NRW and Saxony are so different, you might think they're different countries.
But still they are one country.
So Austria could easily join Germany and they would simply be "that weird area in the south" probably.
