-As an another user said, Santa Monica is a tourist trap but it's cool if you've never been there. Visit the Promenade, Pier, beach, etc, which is all within walking distance.
-Downtown LA has: Olvera Street, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, and Financial District all within walking distance. Go to top of the US Bank Tower up like 70 stories, which has great views. Have lunch at the Grand Central Market.
-Long Beach: Queen Mary, Downtown Long Beach, Aquarium

LACMA is being remodeled and has a number of galleries closed, though it's still pretty cool. The La Brea Tar Pits are next door, which is cool if you're in the area. LACMA is a few blocks from The Grove/LA Farmer's Market. You can just walk the half mile or so.
