The black death just happened randomly. When you consider that humans now or will eventually have the ability to design a bioweapon that could be even more harmful, all it takes is one team somewhere on the planet to make it to wipe out all life.

Also look at that from other perspective. Imagine therss a rock about to fall on earth - a comet, asteroid, whatever. Humanity have the highest probability to survive it now from all the previous generations, due to shelters, ability to detect it before impact or maybe possibly destroying it, Armageddon-style.
I also don't think we are self destructive enough to kill ourselves.
One egghead once told me it doesn't work like that - according to him, if virus is too deadly, it will naturally evolve into something less deadly, because it benefits a virus not to kill, but to live parasitically in hosts body for years, like herpes virus.
