There is such a high density of plant life in the rainforest that they sucked all the nutrients out of the soil long, long ago. Additionally all the rain means that any nutrients that get added in are quickly washed away. The rainforest is supported by a symbiotic relationship between the trees and fungi which live on their roots and capture incoming nutrients before they can bleed into the soil and be washed away into the river. Fungi that cultivation crops aren't adapted to live with. Fungi that are killed when their host trees are burned. Rainforest soil is thin, acidic, and poor in nutrient content.
