They are anti-gay, anti-liberal, and anti-woman. That's why.

While the meat of the issue is the extradition bill, at the high level it is an example of PRC meddling in Hong Kong affairs in violation of the one country two systems autonomy that was part of the handover agreement for Hong Kong and Macau. It's essentially a PRC override on the Hong Kong court system, and this is rightfully seen as unacceptable by most Hong Kongers. They do want the ability to choose their own executive officer as well without Beijing providing a list of approved candidates, but that battle has already been lost years ago.

>HK tries to pass law
>People protest them
>Foreign press tries desperately to make it seem like it was all China's doing
Seriously if China was running the show all these protestors would be dead already.

First point is not entirely correct. The chief executive of Hong Kong, along with the heads of the various departments of the government, serve at Beijing's pleasure. The chief executive cannot run until being vetted by Beijing, and he/she then jointly appoints the principal officials with Beijing, and so on until the executive branch heads are filled out.

For the legislative side, there are 70 seats in the legislature. Only 40 are directly elected by the people, the other 30 are elected by a mix of special interest groups, professionals, corporations, etc. The issue with this system is that it allows minority voting blocks far more power in the council than the rest of the population, as well as the whole issue around giving corporations votes. In some of those voting blocks, corporations make up the entirety of the block with no "real" persons voting.

So while the government is technically Hong Kong's, the executive is majority pro-Beijing and and the legislature is a pro-Beijing majority due to the underrepresentation of Hong Kong's population in the legislature. Beijing has reneged on past promises to allow the population to have a more direct role in their government by allowing them to vote for an executive officer of their choice and removing the functional constituency system.

>Seriously if China was running the show all these protestors would be dead already.
China now is a different beast than the one at Tienanmen Square. Xi has a much better hold on his power than Deng in 1989, and is more willing to play the long game so as not to look like a monster in the eyes of the world. Hong Kong is much nearer and dearer to the western world than Xinjiang or Tibet, since it's been the financial capital of Asia for decades and is basically the gateway to mainland China for western companies.

hold up here, you're going to have to explain to me how this is the PRC's fault for the extradition bill when it was the HK legislatures choice to pursue or withdraw the bill.

being approved is not the same as being controlled. example, supreme court justices are appointed by the executive branch but they do not obey the executive branch. in this way the judiciary is still considered independent?

Just China

If HK does anything that is pro-beijing then the PRC is behind it. If they do anything pro-anglo then that's just because they are smart and believe in progressive values.

Except that Supreme Court appointees do not operate under the threat of being stripped of their wealth, disappearance, or disappearance of their family if they do not toe the party line. If you honestly think any of those people are going to vote against Beijing in a way that strengthens Hong Kong's autonomy, I have a bridge to sell you. Also, you did not refute any of the issues with the legislature or the PRC's promise back in the early 2000s for moving to universal sufferage, which was then reneged. What would be the issue? Hong Kongers are smart enough to know that actual independence as a separate entity is impossible, despite the bluster and flag waving in the protests. They just want the autonomy they were promised as part of the handover deal. It's not 2047 yet.

So basically it sounds like HK is even more screwed than anyone realizes if you are correct. If their government is already beijing controlled then only military intervention can save them. So yeah good info but bad argument.

and are those threats enshrined in law or merely presumptions? Beijing never promised universal suffrage, the British attempted to poison the chalice before the handover and was against the joint declaration and withdrawn. again, please point to me the exact issue, with evidence, that the PRC are actively eroding the rights of hong kong. everything in hong kong right now is a direct result of the british legacy system left over. except now instead of being appointed a governor by the UK, they pick from a basket of candidates vetted by beijing.

But not paid, you faggot, that's the point.
If not, then you are not the avg Amerimutt anyways.

Wect is falling apart, meanwhile China is only at the beginning of its reign.

You Anglo shits and seething Asian neighbours are nothing but slaves.
