Colonised by the British for a bit over 800 years, stubbornly refused to give up their language or religion (despite the Catholic church doing absolutely fuck all for them). Fought for independence so they could preserve their culture and govern themselves, only to then neglect their culture and language completely while fully assimilating British culture and English language. Then they decided to become a German vassal state and hand away their sovereignty, making the previous 800 years of rebellion completely and utterly pointless.
