Well ofcourse we're similar, American culture is largely based off British/Anglo culture hence the language. I tend to find we have somewhat different attitudes(Americans more optimistic etc.) and differing sense of humour, but it wouldn't be that hard to integrate into each others countries. We have a longer history though and because of that have some things deep rooted in our culture that might be unusual to Americans though.
