Where can you best find people with the attitudes of old China? Is there any bastion of ethnic Chinese somewhere in the world that hasn’t been touched by communism or materialism?
Because everyone on the mainland has changed, over just 100 years, from being collectivist and imperialist to indifferent and materialistic.
Does old china exist somewhere? Maybe in Southeast Asia? Somewhere in America?
Taiwan and Hong Kong, Chinese culture is all weird and warped on the mainland after the cultural revolution, it's a completely destroyed culture that was rebuilt into this weird Communist controlled Frankenstein.
Also Chinese cultural was always Materialistic, that's why they were successful
Henry Garcia
the chinese weren't successful before communism/capitalism they instead valued a very rigid and stable social order
Landon Morales
Taiwan is probably the closest you will get. They're pretty cool people from what I can tell.
Brayden Cruz
Ok, materialism is the wrong word. I mean the general modernization of Chinese society. What used to be a very tranquil attitude towards innovation and a strong dedication to tradition (which caused China to stagnate, but also was 100% its charm) became the attitude of kill or be killed that seems to be so present in modern China. It's a weird system where no one values the individual except the individual himself, if that makes sense.
It wasn't always completely that way, and it's things like Communist starvation and the Great Leap Forward that ruined old China.
David Perez
But both Taiwan and Honk Kong have been westernized and while still strict, there is still a lot of social mobility. That was almost unthinkable 100 years ago and not what OP is looking for, I think.
Nicholas Nguyen
>taiwan and HK only
Cringe. Many many regions and cities of mainland China are the real deal, such as Xi'an, Kaifeng, Dalian, the historical village of Fenghuang, lots of places in Yunnan, I could go on.
Blake Walker
It's not really possible to preserve the exact culture of a place from a century ago unless it's well isolated. Western countries have had similarly drastic cultural shifts too, China is just the outlier. I do get why you miss it though. youtube.com/watch?v=vIJYEaBH1Yk
>I could go on. You should
Jace Mitchell
Yeah actually, please do go on
Alexander Rivera
you cant modernize and retain the strict unmovable social structure of the middle ages. if you want chinese culture take taiwan take it it leave it.
I just meant that historically Chinese culture but great emphasis on production. While Confucianism looked down upon merchants and traders, the Chinese were builders and creators, that's what I meant by material.
Social mobility is different now than it was in the past, but compared to any hierarchical societies, China was comparatively egalitarian. Anybody could take the Imperial exams for office and even the Mandate of Heaven could be granted to a simple peasant, such as the Hongwu Emperor the founder of the Ming Dynasty. While there were theoretical restrictions on movement, Chinese communities grew organically all across the Pacific, some communities dating back to the fall of the Song dynasty.

fucking cringe whenever someone claims that "old chinese culture no longer exists on the mainland" and "taiwan/hong kong preserved it" as if one fucking event made the culture practiced by 1 billion people disappear totally. china still has chinese culture whether you like it or not. what you see is what you get. just because you dont like it, doesnt mean its not chinese culture. this is just how chinese people are. if you dont like us and the culture, just say it, dont go around saying its not "real" culture. also, hong kong and taiwan are too westernized/liberal anyway.
Juan Brooks
Based Taiwan has preserved true Chinese culture and kept it safe from those disgusting mainlander commies.
Honestly the dying western regions of China are like this. Tibet for one. But they will die with the people.
Brody Sanders
Taiwan is japanese chinese culture and Hong Kong is colonial chinese culture
Justin Reyes
and what is this supposed to prove? that taiwan's and hong kong's buildings are all pagodas and temples? have you been to either one of those countries?
Jordan Taylor
I never said a thing about hk or taiwan. I'm saying mainland chinese culture is being replaced. it's becoming more like the new world's culture, in part heavily fabricated and romanticized.
Jacob Torres
its a fucking replica city, for local tourists to visit if they dont want to leave china, not a replacement for chinese culture in the mainland lol relax, it's not going anywhere.
Logan Thompson
eh, think what you want. China consumes a lot of fake shit.
Caleb Edwards
thanks for your insight, china expert!
Zachary Morales
Unironically Japan

>Is there any bastion of ethnic Chinese somewhere in the world that hasn’t been touched by communism or materialism? No because Chinese society is extremely materialistic to begin with.
