Why are arcades so successful in Japan but died out in America?

Japan is smaller. America big. No point in going out to a far arcade place just to pwn noobs when I can do that on my couch.

All shopping malls have them. there are a few arcades in medium sized cities. They are not all that popular but I frequent them often, it's a good place to make new friends. It's one of the biggest reasons I want to visit Japan

Want to read some opinions that go deeper than island phenomenon bullshit

Arcade culture died in the US after the NES was released

How common are shopping malls there? They're mostly abandoned here.

because people rather play vidya at home

last time I went to the mall it was 70-80% empty

>a place mainly dominated by gatekeeping dorks who make anyone who isn't as obsessive as they are feel uncomfortable
I feel about as bad for arcades as I do for comic book stores.

I went down the YouTube rabbit hole of dead mall videos around 2016. There's something soothing about watching people explore dead malls.

I guess you can't go to the arcade in your underwear nor smoke weed

Very popular, it's one of the few safe places to visit because armed security guards everywhere. They are full year round, especially during the weekends but they are not really a place to meet new people, more like a place to visit with your friends and eat, play some arcade/watch a movie.

Nice restaurants, shopping malls and expensive cachaçarias (night bars) are the places to visit here in the countryside of Brazil during the night time. can't talk about the seacoast and big cities because I never lived there.

The way you described malls reminded me of American malls when I was growing up in the 90s and early 2000s.

It's nice, I hope it doesn't die anytime soon, it's slowly changing because people prefer to buy things on online shopping stores. There are fewer books and clothes stores and more and more places to eat, get drunk, watch movies, go to the gym, play games, etc

Why? Shopping its big time

It's easier to just swipe your credit card over and over on Amazon or whatever than getting off your ass and driving 30min to the closest mall

it's more about selection, for example I can only find good gunpla kits online the hobby stores in my area are overpriced and have a mediocre selection

Even if there's a mall near me, I'll order it online. If I'm going to a physical location, I prefer something locally owned and run to the big corporate chains that are typical of malls, so I'll just go to the local institutions. American downtowns are seeing a bit of a revival, so it's just nicer to go there.

>American downtowns are seeing a bit of a revival
I have noticed that with particular types of stores (mostly game and book stores)
it's pretty nice desu

More like both parties viewing each other with contempt

I just wanted to buy some comics and play some vidya. They didn't have to bully.

im merican californian i see people my age 20-29 in a budget not spending on arcades

japs don't own many consoles and hardly any pc with graphics cards
idea is kid is out of smaller home to play games rather than play games while mom can see them and get mad
