When I talk to Japanese friends they all love Okinawa but Ryukyu is just this thing that once existed to them, they don’t relate to it at all.
Even when you go visit there Ryukyu is merely the tourist sites that have remained from the old Kingdom.
You will only hear their Okinawa style music blaring from every tourist restaurant.

But when KMT occupied Taiwan after WWII they started a very aggressive Sinicization campaign.
Before 1945 Mandarin was not the language of Taiwan and Taiwanese were not considered Chinese (there is many different Chinese words to describe it but in English it all mean Chinese so it’s difficult to understand).
This is all recent political development.
