It exists because Macedonians exist. Macedonians exist because Serbs, Greeks and Bulgarians each tried aggressively assimilating Macedonians Slavs which paradoxically, due to the resistance of the locals to being assimilated, resulted in the emergence of a Macedonian national identity.

19th century Greeks themselves attempted using ancient Macedonia and Alexander to distance Macedonian Slavs from Serbia and Bulgaria and convince them that they're Slavic-speaking Greeks who need to return to their supposed roots.
