i'm going to take a moment to deviate from my usual posts, so bear with me: the actress starring in the 2020 Mulan remake, Liu Yifei, has just voiced her support for the Hong Kong police. these are the police who have been brutalizing protestors for several months now with batons, tear gas, and rubber bullets, and recently blinded a young medic in one eye. Liu has a social media platform of 65 million followers, and has been in the national spotlight since her casting - her words have influence and impact. her conscious decision to stand by the HK police sends a clear message: that violence against civilians is acceptable as a means of control, intimidation, and suppression.
this breaks my heart. as a person of Chinese descent, Mulan’s character was a source of inspiration and empowerment throughout my childhood, and I’m sure I wasn’t alone in my excitement to see the remake, butI'm even more saddened and disgusted by Liu Yifei’s support of the police. note that Liu is a naturalized American citizen, and reaps the benefits of freedom and democracy in the US while supporting those who are fighting to silence it in China.
if Mulan were real and here now, she would be out on the streets of Hong Kong, fighting for the fundamental rights of 7 million Hong Kong citizens. please, please, please consider boycotting this movie. skip it, pirate it, do what you need to do, but show that you won’t stand for police brutality.

fuck chink kong and fuck the usa

that’s a valid point of view, but imo it boils down to prioritizing increased awareness and support for the protestors over onscreen diversity. I would hope that most asian actors feel the same, and even if not, we’ve seen this past year thatasian representation in hollywood is (at last) growing and thriving and will continue with or without mulan.
in regards to her salary, this is about a lot more than Liu herself. it’s not so much about punishing her than it is about condemning the thing she’s standing for, and what better platform to do that on than a movie with a potentially massive audience?there’s also the fact that Disney is a huge influence on Western culture, and their radio silence in response to the boycott is harmful and disappointing.
Hong Kong news coverage is already very widespread, but still we have to work to keep it relevant, to keep it people’s conversations, and to let the world know what is happening. the mulan boycott started within Hong Kong itself. it has now reached South Korea and it continues to grow. this kind of activism, though indirect, does indeed help. not only is it a show of solidarity, just like the pro-HK rallies people have been holding all over the globe, it’s also an opportunity for people to learn about what’s been going on.international attention is one of the most powerful tools that the people of HK have - without it, the situation could escalate very rapidly and turn much uglier than it already has.

Are you retards actually watching this shitty ass reboot? Who actually watched Mulan? That movie was shit. The only redeemable part was the song. Please tell me you fags aren’t actually gonna watch this shitty ass reboot?
Jack Anderson
be honest mozuful did the chinks put you upto this?
Why the fuck would Mulan side with a bunch of foreign sympathizers?
Cameron Robinson
>both Mulan and Jackie Chan side with the Hong Kong Police it's almost like Chinese people want what's best for China instead of siding with traitors who defend foreign interests...
>Mulan and Jackie Chan You mean people whose balls are tied to Beijine. Do you think any of them would have successful chinese careers if they were pro Hong Kong?
Yeah it's almost like citizens of China don't want their country to collapse or something. Fucking strange I know.
Noah Gomez
>eah it's almost like citizens of China don't want their country to collapse or something How would Hong Kong leaving make their cunt collapse? Plus, a government overhaul would be a good thing. Why else do you think so many Chinese people are leaving China? And this is coming from the country that was the first to declare independence to Europe in 1776.
Imagine if new england wanted to be it's own thing and go against American policy and interest you'd stamp out that shit quicker than China is.
Bentley Jackson
Because it's part of a larger campaign to promote separatism in China.
Matthew Allen
>Because it's part of a larger campaign to promote separatism in China. China is genociding Tibetians and Uyghurs, I don't see why they wouldn't want to be independent. Maybe China should try to improve their quality of life and stop copying 1984 if they didn't want their people to hate them. The only reason you hear "good" things from some Chinese people is because they're forced to say that.
Oliver Rivera
Yea. I can see our government curb stomping that shit to death in a very public way...
California is literally planning a referendum on independence and no one cares. I'm sure you'd rather they leave.
Jack Martin
Who knows what Liu Yifei really thinks. After all, she became a US citizen so how strongly can her affection to the PRC be?
As with all Chinese celebrities she just had to follow what the CCP wants. They started this “I stand with HK police you can beat me now” meme and the celebrities had to follow suit as not to fall out of favor. It’s a business decision.
Much like Taiwanese franchises in China having to claim they stand by the One China principle so they won’t get stormed by Nationalists. Whether they truly believe it or not, who knows. But 1.5 billion potential costumers are just too much to pass up.
Jordan Lewis
>n-no you can't just not want genocide. you have to defend an authoritarian government
>would a soldier in the chinese army support the chinese military wow what a real brain buster

The chinese people leaving china are still fiercely loyal to china. Australia and Canada have been having massive pro china protests for a few weeks now

it's clear that the Kongers want out because China is removing their privileges and snowflake economic position
Ayden Ramirez
>The chinese people leaving china are still fiercely loyal to china. >Australia and Canada have been having massive pro china protests for a few weeks now Lol no. I bussed past the Hong Kong protest at Broadway-City Hall station and there were like 25 pro-China people (who were probably paid and far more pro Hong Kongers. You never ever see a Chinese flag anywhere, despite there being many Chinese people.
Soyjack is a leftoid psyop like the amerimutt meme.

They need Tibet. They have no natural land barriers and if they let them independent they'd support India and fall under their influence not to mention they've settled Han Chinese in the area to outnumber both Tibetans and the Muslims. And they're not being genocided, you could say that about falung gong practitioners but for the other people groups you couldn't say that. Consider how Canada and the US had huge swathes of Germans, Italians, and Irish people still keeping the practises and language of their homeland but they were Americanized to speak English, act and think of themselves as Americans, is this genocide? Because that's all China wants to do by making people Han Chinese, think, speak and act Chinese. If you believe that is genocide categorizing people in the census as white instead of their ancestral nation or tribe and speaking English instead of Italian or German must also be terrifying to you, right?
John Stewart
this canadians are euros are too easily manipulated to see it
Jace Watson
You cant exist as an independent state in NA by yourself unless you have something like a nuclear deterrent in order to deter diplomatic aggression and attempts to extract concessions though coercive action.
Difference is Germans and Italians moved to the United States. The Tibets were there before the Hans, so its a different story.
Landon Garcia
You know this isn't fucking funny right? This stupid fucking cunt is endorsing genocide solely due to her own pathetic attachment to tradition and nationalism. It's disgusting.
Charles Turner
>nuclear deterrent in order to deter diplomatic aggression and attempts to extract concessions though coercive action. Literally verbal diarrhea. Also Cali can make nukes.
Lucas Turner
lmao dumb fucking americans you'll never stop CHYNA

they're scared, but only the bad westerners. Good ones like italians and germans are ok with China
Oliver Thompson
i get that, Mulan was one of the only live action remakes that I thought might be worthwhile and then it gets marred by this. i’m against cancel culture and I can see how it’s uncomfortable that many with little knowledge of the situation and of china itself are are speaking on the issue, but at the same time the HK protests are a matter of life and death and she needs to be held accountable. Liu being pressured into making a statement is definitely something to consider, and I wouldn’t hold the same opinion if she was a Chinese citizen, but as she’s American I strongly doubt she had no choice in the matter. nevertheless, I hope people refrain from personal attacks on Liu and instead focus on what she’s speaking up for.
