I guess that's just got to do with how the kana were thought up in the first place, I don't know if anyone knows the reason why exactly っ is used to double the next consonant or why う is used to lengthen an お sound etc.

Haven't been to Hokkaido, but I was over Okinawa after a day or two, wanting to go back to mainland Japan.
I got to try skuba diving there which was great, I saw fish I never thought I'd get to see in person or outside of an aquarium, but I was pretty indifferent to everything else.
I got the impression Okinawa as a holiday destination would be more interesting to the Japanese themselves than to folks like me who've already been to cities where it's "like [country] but with a marine twist" if it makes any sense, like me.
