And the reason was is that the way American culture is, it would be impossible to sustain this. Especially with USSR existing. As Americans are historically very against the idea of foreign intervention, unless it's seen as a necessity. And even then there's almost always some dissent against it.

Both, Russia and the USA have a strategic interest in destroying project of unified Europe being able to project its power in a global way, because it would be just another competitior.
