Oaxaca (southern Mexico). Funny and colourful clothes, arranged marriages, women can't vote, Amerindian languages, their own laws, people eat armadillo, legal wife beatings.

our native maya communities easily. Over 20 languages and peoples, many of whom still live lives of 100 years ago or more. many do not speak spanish at all. they are the poorest and yet safest parts of our country, as their communities take laws into their own hands.

Other than that embarrassment, we normally joke about Jayuya and/or Utuado being that odd standing surviving tribe (which to be honest, they probably have more surviving native blood than the rest of us). BUT the weirdest thing I've ever seen is the literal LARP of the taino lifestyle that some people do in the taino ceremonial center sometime.
So all in all, western puerto rico is pretty weird, but at least it's more peaceful and quiet than the eastern counterpart.

In some communities women can't vote or being elected. To avoid a social conflict in the 90s, the government let done Amerindian communities to have their own laws according to their traditions, some Oaxacan communities are extremely patriarcal. The funny thing is that I've seen upper middle class feminist anthropologist WOMEN from Mexico City defending that system, when their stupid opinions don't matter in those communities.
