This is from a Greek forum: This story may not reflect the Northern peoples as a whole, but it personally gave me the worst impression.
On Easter Monday I was in Slovenia for my Erasmus, so me and the other Greeks planned on having a barbeque and a big dinner. We invited kinda a lot people from many different countries.
We told them we would pay the biggest part of the amount (we, 3 people gave over 150 euros for equipment, coal, meat and drinks) and we let them know they could participate with 10 euros or bring something of their own for the dinner. Also, we told them that if someone doesn't have enough money, they could let us know and it wouldn't be a problem. Noone told us has such a problem.
The dinner took place, days passed and most of the people played dumb about giving their share for the dinner. When many days passed and we realized they wouldn't give anything, we asked them to. Literally all the Northerners bargained with excuses like "I drunk 3 beers and he drunk 4 beers, why should I give the same amount of money?". We got so angry that we didn't accepted anything from most of them.
With an exception of Spaniards and Turks being gentlemen, the rest of them were the epitome of gypsiness. They didn't help at all with the shopping and grilling, they came only during the dinner time, they didn't bring anything of their own and in the end they didn't give even a little amount of the stuff they ate.

Around here everyone brings their own drinks and if someone is short on money, didn't have time to get them or something like that other people pitch in theirs. If someone is hosting a barbecue or something bigger they'll pay for it on their own or if it's asked the guests will bring their own part in autistically accurate fashion. Gifts aren't required because we don't need to bring gifts to each other to affirm our friendship though some people sometimes do it (and when they do it means a lot more).

yeah but your contribution is yourself and your own drink. off course if you have a full bottle of some fine cognac you share it if you want to and most do. but you dont expect anything back. some people are fine with just two beers and some coffe, some drinks with both hands all night. its just fair to bring your own stuff and dont push it on others. its easy to rule out the freeloaders here, and since alcohol is so expensive its ok to freeload a little if you are a poor student or something. most people dont mind, we share more than you think its just not expected of us by some weird old rule. we give of free will to thoose we think deserve it.

This is true for all things, and applies to both carefully sharing and not sharing resources.

I had a similar issue with people from Venezuela once. I was organizing my birthday party and brought like 200€ of food and drinks, but I wasn't if they'd be enough. So I told my friends to bring so stuff like 1 bottle of alcool or soft drink, in rofer to complete.
