as another belganon, I would like to add some things to this explanation. First of all, it is simply undeniable that francophones are (generally) extremely arrogant when it comes to their language. In their view dutch is a crude and irrelevant excuse of a language spoken by retarded potato farmers. This is partially true of course, as french is much more useful internationally and has actual literature and what not. But at the same time many of these walloons have an enormous inferiority complex because they are so poor compared to flanders. The province of Henegouwen (hainout) is among the poorest regions in western europe, even worse than northern france. Luik/Liège and especially Charleroi are also gigantic shitholes. The walloon parliament recently also said that "Flanders is 15 years ahead of us".
As the other belgian user pointed out, Wallonia, as an industrialized region during the industrial revolution, used to be much more prosperous than Flanders, but this obviously changed. Flanders as a concept and a nationalistic movement is also a reaction to this former power dynamic where the elites were francophone and the dutch speaking commoners treated as second class citizens. You can realize this by just looking a map. The provinces of east and west flanders show that current day flanders has almost nothing to do with the historic county of flanders. Flemish nationalism is a reaction to the bullying of francophones while they were in power and the loss of brussels, which used to be a dutch-speaking city.

Walloons have also acted like dicks throughout recent history, trying to "gain territory" (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Municipalities_with_language_facilities#Recent_trends) and trying to move the "language border". Another important example: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Split_of_the_Catholic_University_of_Leuven Another good example is the brussels international airport, where francophone politicians rerouted the night flight traffic over flemisch towns instead of brussels because there had been noise complaints. Easy votes for the politician, since the affected flemings can't vote on politics in brussels.
The belgian judicial system is a complete and extremely complex mess, mostly because of the language barrier. The belgian political system is also a mess (There are seven governments for about 11 million people) because wallonia consistently votes more socialist and flanders more "right-wing". The belgian federal government has also been losing power over the years because both sides want more autonomy, this has led to an even more complex system where both parties can just blame te other while doing nothing. We hold the world record on longest government formation (541 days), and the current formation might be the most difficult one ever. The press and television is also completely separated, there is almost no walloon news in flemish papers/television. Walloons are also a huge tax drain from a flemisch perspective, as there is a transfer of money from the more prosperous flanders to wallonia (Most modern separatist movements are about money, see catalonia)
So basically fuck the "elite" bruxellois and their dumb shithole (the walloons are kind of ok most of the time), I am at the point where I am unironically sympathetic to the separatist movement, even though the entire narrative is pretty much fabricated. Not that it will ever happen anyway

You won't learn without messing up. It's part of the learning process. You don't just get perfect at some point. You need to make mistakes in order to learn from them. You'll write something, and then an user will correct you, and then you might think something like "wow, how did I get that wrong?" and moment like that will help you to remember to not do that mistake again.
You have literally nothing to lose. You can only gain things.

I was searching the contents of an old flashcard on my ds and discovered i downloaded one of those ubisoft learning french games, tried it and apparently im 25% into french, took my interest so i might start to actually learn it, it helps that some words are almost the same to their english and spanish counterpart.
This sort of thing as a supplement to App-study. When I've tried stuff like kids TV it was just wildly inaccessible. In the next year or so I'm going to have to go there for work and I want to make the most of the chance to actually speak to people.
Have you learned it for real yourself? How did you get over the initial hurdle?

Being more precise, I was initally expecting that you were engaging more in pop culture, like watching TV dramas or listening to Mandarin-language songs. That sort of immersion helps with motivation quite a bit. As for kids television: What about something dubbed into Mandarin, say for example, Peppa Pig? I had the unfortunate luck of landing a teacher who used that tired old method of rote memorisation. So it was more like I was forced to smash my head through the hurdle. I haven't used it in a while so I've forgotten much of it. Of course, depending on where you'll be moving to, I can understand the gripes with the spoken language.

I am doing Spanish Programmatic, started a week or so ago on Bolume 2. One unit is usually ~20 printed pages long, has dialogs and a ton of exercises. There’re around six hundred pages in total so I think i’ll be done in 2020.

As I said the Spanish one is good for grammar but I can’t speak for French. Also that course contains no reading exercises but instead a lot of pronunciation and listening. Speech isn’t slow like in beginner podcasts but not as fast as in radio, and there are two 20 min long tapes per unit. I like doing it, FSI doesn’t seem as boring as some books (and apps).

Funny how say "Walloons also acted like dicks throughout recent history" and to prove your point, link to the "Leuven crisis" case which is about the Flemish literally kicking the Walloons out of the university while yelling "Walen Buiten" (Walloons Out), Walloons who had then to build a university from scratch somewhere else. I looked for content in Zulu, a major language in South Africa, and barely found anything. It has 12 million native speakers and is spoken in one of the most developed countries of the African continent. If you search for natives in language exchange apps, you might end up failed from the start because these languages are so unpopular that most aren’t even listed in them.
