Irish farmers seem to be in a constant state of claiming their profession is untenable and yet continue making a living from it. They seem to have a culture of dramatic protest when market conditions become a bit challenging so I'm not really believing them at this stage.
It's also an open market and they're not entitled to their desired cut from meat plants or supermarkets, the reality is probably there's too much supply as western society is cutting down on red meat consumption for health reasons.

The consumption of beef over a lifetime is associated, but not conclusively, with a minor increase in some health issues like heart disease. Actually not eating red meat at all is unhealthier than consuming it in moderation.
