Just in terms of GDP, India > China after WW2. And China was basically destroyed by WW2 and Civil War, so India was in a much better situation than China was. China looked like the sick man in bed gasping its dying breaths. Then around the early 1980s after Deng introduced market reforms, China shot up like a rocket and there has been no looking back since then.

China have put effort on demolishing the differences and put simplified Chinese (basically traditional Chinese for dummies) as formal language, and allowing Beijing to take care of everything within the nation
India have like shit ton of languages, with only the rich ones learning English in order to communicate within themselves and they're usually thinking about going out of India (see Microsoft, IBM, Apple etc), and the central government of India do allow each state government to rule as they wish, which made the states not function as what the central government wanted

Quite a few things.
1. Ethnicities/language. India doesn't have a real language every single person in the country speaks. Hindu is the plurality language, but far from the majority mother tongue you'd ideally want. There's also too many ethnicities, so regional cultures are distracting in forming good cohesive policy.
2. Muslims. They're like niggers in america. The least educated, lowest literacy and lowest employed people
3. Hindu castes. Dalits and other low castes face built in cultural discrimination. This inevitably leads to high caste nepotism in the labour market.
4. Geography. India can't unlock it's vast labour force like China. A very small percent of India's population lives near coastal ports. So manufacturing is concentrated in less populated areas that don't help where it's needed most.
5. Stupidity in general. India hasn't invested and forced kids to go to school in the same way China did. Regular schooling is only mandatory till 10th grade and every year more is considered only useful for higher level education. There's also tons of private schools that pretty suck just as much but inflate grades.
5. National naiveness. South Asians are incredibly naive about the challenges that face their countries and how much money and time it takes to correct them.
