i used it to wipe out many a native tribe in my new world campaign in that game
but flanking is the name of the game in total war
flanking and morale (the two of which are inextricably linked)
what i do is make a sort of funnel formation, with rifles holding fire on either side of the approaching enemy, forming a sort of enclosure
cannon lined up at the base of the formation
when they're within canister shot range open fire, all weapons
when they close in on the cannon, the cannon stop firing and i have my pikemen or bayonets waiting behind the cannon charge between the enemy and the big guns
meanwhile my lines of infantry on their flanks rush into their flanks/rear and my cavalry have circled around to block off any escape
