same here. if you don't have a TV and a radio, you can opt-out. but they will check if you're saying the truth, it's not easy

Was the same here until like 2-3 years ago. There was even a cheaper version if you just had a radio but no TV.
Right now they argue with smartphones etc. spreading everyone kinda has an device to watch their (mostly) crap so you need really good reasons to not pay it. (like a retired person with a very low income etc.)

The strange thing is it isn't even a real tax but an forced payment. You can simply not pay it and wait untill they at some point come with their lawyers. (which I actually do and still have the naive dream that at some point that shitty system will be changed and I do not have to pay my debts)

It's stricter than that. The license is technically for anything that can receive live broadcasts, whatever that means. So a smartphone would still count. That said they have no way of enforcing it and you can just ignore them so it makes no difference anyway.

I don't see the point of this debate since we all pay for our television in some way or another. BBC is a government organization and they will get their money. Same goes for our and the German public broadcasting.
