Extremely harsh punishment if you step out of your boundary even a little bit starting in early childhood.
For example, if you turn in a writing assignment at school and use kanji to write a word instead of sounding it out in hiragana when the national education guideline for kanji learning doesn't include that kanji for your age level yet, the teacher marks it as wrong, and you get worse grade. The official reasoning is to level the playing field, but the real reason is to punish show-offs. But, of course, it's completely ridiculous since a child can learn new kanjis just by reading a magazine or even watching TV.
